About Illawarra Sports High School

The school was established in 1956 formerly as Berkeley High School until further transitioning in 1998 to a sports-orientated school, reflected through their current name. This has allowed the school to trade a generous focus to the knowledge and practical activities a sport specialty school is able to offer to the approximate 750 students enrolled. Illawarra Sports High School is a government-funded co-educational specialist secondary school located in the suburb of Berkeley Wollongong, New South Wales.

The sports development program that operates at the high school successfully offers basketball, hockey, netball, rugby league & union, soccer (affiliated with Sydney FC), surfing and touch football. The extensive variety of sports that are offered through the school allow both males and females to excel in their strengths and develop in their weaknesses through the highly qualified staffing panel. The success of this school is prevalent through the sporting stories that have enrolled and graduated such as Caitlin Foord soccer player for the Matildas and Sydney FC, Brett & Glenn Stewart Rugby league players for the Manly Sea Eagles, NSW State of Origin and the Kangaroos and Les Murray, former broadcaster, sports journalist and analyst.

What the client said

The Deputy Principal was impressed with the fact that AS Urban had such a wide range of different styles of outdoor furniture which could be colour coordinated for different positions within each area within the school. He said the principal had recently visited their sister school on the north side, the new Hunter Sports High School and said that being an older school, they need to lift their facilities to be more in keeping with the Hunter and replace old rotten timber benches.

AS Urban provided a site inspection with the Deputy, to review the school areas in relation to the number of students that use the spaces, what the spaces would be used for, how often current bins are emptied, best positions for new bins, and how the work was to be staged. One key requirement was for the seating to be maintenance-free and bins to have in-your-face colour coding for a new recycling program with waste separation.

It was quickly established that the Garden Quad was the priority for Stage 1 and the central hub within the Garden Quad was perfect for 1 large 6-sided Spencer Round Setting. Then it was worked out how many Macquarie 4-Sided Picnic Settings would be needed along each end of the quad to compliment the bush garden feel of the space. Following that, the positions for the large capacity recycling bins were strategically calculated to be placed throughout.

They said that despite getting 3 quotes, AS Urban was very competitive and had the best furniture to suit the space. It also had the benefit of being maintenance free.

AS Urban were easy to work with and coordinated the delivery to avoid busy times with their graduation and other end of year events. They were very happy with the end result and promptly ordered additional matching furniture for stage 2 in other areas of the school.
